USE
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog used as a hunting dog still in many parts of the world, but it is also prized as guard dogs and company.

FCI CLASSIFICATION
Group 6 hound type dogs, tracker dogs (except lebrelesy breeds).
Section 3 breeds tested not working.

BRIEF HISTORY
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is presently the only registered breed indigenous to southern Africa. This breed has its origins in the Cape Colony in South Africa, where they crossed the dogs of the first settlers domesticated dogs of the Hottentots, the Hottentot dog crested. Hunted mainly in groups of 2 or 3 dogs, the main function of the Rhodesian Ridgeback or Lion dog was to hunt the lion, who with great skill and agility kept him at bay until the arrival of the hunter. The first standard was written by F.R. Barnes, in Bulawayo, Rhodesia in 1922, was based on the Dalmatian and was approved by The South African Kennel Union in 1926.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog of good looks, strong, muscular, agile and active, apparently symmetrical, balanced and well balanced. An adult Ridgeback is a beautiful dog, well built and athletic, able to travel long distances to an appropriate speed. It emphasizes its agility, elegance and soundness with no tendency for the masses.
The peculiarity of the breed is the ridge on back formed by hair growing in opposite direction to the rest of the mantle. The crest is distinctive of the race. The ridge must be clearly defined and symmetrical, tapering to the hip. Must start immediately behind the shoulders and continue up the bones of the hip (rump). The crest should only have two crowns, identical and opposite. The start of the crown can not exceed 1 / 3 of the total length of the ridge. A good average width of the ridge is 5 cm.

CHARACTER / TEMPERAMENT
The Ridgeback is noble, majestic and intelligent. It's a dog of great character, with its calm temperament is devoted and affectionate with his owner, reserved with strangers, no signs of aggression or fear.

HEAD

CRANIAL REGION
Skull
Good length (the width of the skull between the ears, the distance from the occipital to the frontonasal depression, and depression frontonasal distance to the nose, must be equal), wide, flat and without wrinkles between the ears when at rest.
Frontonasal Depression
Frontonasal depression should be well defined and not in a straight line from the nose to the occipital bone.

FACIAL REGION
Truffle
The nose should be black or brown. A black nose should be accompanied by dark eyes, but a brown nose should be accompanied by amber eyes.
Snout
The muzzle should be long, deep and powerful.
Lips
Lips should be firm and stick to the jaws.
Boca
Strong jaw and full, with a perfect scissor bite (upper incisors closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws).
The teeth are well developed, especially the canines.
Cheeks
Cheeks should be net.
Eyes
Are moderately well apart, round, bright and sparkling, with intelligent expression, their color harmonizing with coat color.
Ears
Are not widespread rather high, medium size, rather wide at base and gradually tapering to a rounded tip. Should be carried close to head.

NECK
Should be rather long, strong, without dewlap.

BODY
Back
Powerful.
Back
Strong, muscular and slightly arched.
Chest
It should not be too wide, but very deep and very capacity, the chest should reach to the elbow.
Ledge
Must be visible when viewed from the side.

Ribs
Moderately well sprung, will never round barrel-shaped, as it would be detrimental to the speed.
Cola
It is thick but not exaggerated, heavy at birth and decreases progressively towards the tip. Of moderate length. Should not have a set too high or too low and should be worn with a slight upward curve but never curled.

TIPS
Forelimbs
Perfectly straight, strong and well boned, elbows close to body.When viewed from the side, front his members should be wider than when viewed from the front.
The pasterns should be strong and slightly sloping.

Shoulders
They should slope, net and muscular, denoting speed.
Feet
Should be compact and round, with well-arched toes, the pads are round, resistant and elastic. The feet are protected by hair that grows between the pads and fingers.
Hindquarters
Must have a well-defined muscles and net knee well bent and hocks are strong and lowered.
Movement
In straight lines, casual and active gaits.
COAT
Hair
Should be short and dense, fine, smooth and shiny, never woolly nor silky.
Color
From light to dark complexion swarthy dark. A little white on chest and toes is permissible, but excessive white hairs on the belly and limbs above the carpus or tarsus is undesirable. A dark muzzle and ears are permissible. Excessive black hairs on the coat are undesirable.
SIZE
Height
Desired heights are:
Males: from 63 cm (25'') up to 69 cm (27'')
Females: from 61 cm (24'') to 66 cm (26'')

Weight
The desired weights are:
Males: 36.5 kg (80 lbs)
Females: 32 kg (70 lbs)

DEFECTS
Any deviation of any of the above points should be considered as missing. The seriousness with which must be regarded in exact proportion depends on the degree of deviation from the standard.

NB
Males should have 2 apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
